Who are we?
EuropeActive and NEN: Pioneering Excellence in the Fitness Industry
FITcert® is a European certification scheme designed to elevate fitness clubs to new heights of operational excellence.
It's the result of a strategic partnership between EuropeActive and NEN, two organisations united by a shared mission: raising standards and driving continuous improvement across the fitness industry.
EuropeActive brings deep sector expertise, representing the fitness and physical activity industry across Europe. NEN, the Dutch standardisation institute, brings rigour and credibility in developing and managing certification schemes.
Together, they created FITcert® to give clubs a clear, independent way to prove what good practice looks like, built on the EN 17229 standard and grounded in real industry experience.
About EuropeActive
EuropeActive is the leading not-for-profit organisation representing the European fitness and physical activity sector. Our mission is to make more people, more active, more often by supporting fitness clubs and professionals across Europe in achieving excellence. We advocate for policies and standards that enhance the quality and effectiveness of fitness services, ensuring a positive impact on public health and well-being.
As a key operator in the FITcert® scheme, EuropeActive manages the initial stages of the certification process. Our responsibilities include:
- Statement of Commitment: Assisting fitness clubs in declaring their dedication to meeting the European standard EN 17229:2019.
- Self-Assessment: Guiding centres through a comprehensive self-assessment to evaluate their compliance with operational, management, and customer service standards.
About NEN
NEN is the Dutch knowledge network for standards development and implementation, playing a crucial role in enhancing the quality and safety of products, services, and systems. With extensive experience in conformity assessment and certification, NEN is committed to fostering a culture of excellence across various sectors.
In the FITcert® scheme, NEN oversees the critical phases of conformity assessment and certification, ensuring an unbiased and rigorous evaluation of fitness clubs. Our responsibilities include:
- Conformity Assessment: Partnering with independent certification bodies to verify the accuracy and completeness of the self-assessment conducted by fitness club.
- (Re)Certification: Conducting thorough evaluations to award and renew the FITcert® quality mark, signifying a clubs's adherence to the European standard EN 17229:2019.

Licensed Inspection Bodies
Certification for levels 3 and 4 is done by independent testing bodies. For levels 3 and 4, you conclude a contract with a NEN-affiliated certification body (IFCI Register BV, KIWA ISA SPORT) . The certification body independently assesses the club or studio's self-assessment or visits the club or studio for an audit.
